Derbent hosts Days of Jewish Culture

Makhachkala, August 25, 2015. On September 22 to 27, Festival Days of Jewish culture "Shalom, Derbent" will take place in the Museum of World Culture and Religion History in Derbent within the celebration of the 2000th anniversary of the city, the museum’s spokesperson reports.

The festival is held in order to familiarize Dagestanis with the unique culture of the mountainous Jews. The events aims at harmonizing the society and decreasing the level of xenophobia among the population, preserving Jewish heritage and strengthening the international friendship and spiritual unity of the peoples living in Dagestan. The event is called to demonstrate the culture and traditions of the Jews.

The author and organizer of the project "Shalom, Derbent" is Dagestan regional Jewish national-cultural autonomy, which won a grant competition announced by the NGO FJNCA (Federal Jewish National Cultural Autonomy) in Moscow. The uniqueness of the project is that such a large and multi-faceted project dedicated to the culture of the Jews being an integral part of the multi-ethnic Dagestan in the ancient city of Derbent will be held for the first time.
