Makhachkala, July 29, 2015. Chinese investors are exploring the potential of Dagestan for the construction of a number of small hydropower plants in the basins of the Sulak and Samur rivers.

The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China in Russia, Li Hui, the adviser - envoy of the Chinese Embassy for Economic and Commercial Affairs Zhang Di, the vice-president of the Russian branch of ZTE Corporation Van Dong, the vice-president of "Industrial and Commercial Bank of China" Veytsze Lan, the head of the Corporation "Gezhouba" in Russia Song Liang and other representatives of industrial and financial companies discussed the prospects of cooperation.

The director of Dagestan branch of "RusHydro" Timur Gamzatov in particular noted: "The Chinese businessmen display interest to the river basins of Sulak and Samur. Compared with the productively used basin of the river Sulak, the basin of the river Samur still remain undeveloped. During the seasonal flood more than 500 million cubic meters of water waste out to sea. The construction of one large or several medium-sized hydropower plants may solve this problem".

Dagestan has a high stock of hydropower resources. It is estimated at 50 billion kWh, of which only 10 percent is utilized. The Chinese colleague asked to assess this potential. We may both construct the hydroelectric power stations and attract companies who can deliver the equipment for construction or offer it for lease.
