Makhachkala, September 7, 2011. 1696 HIV-infected Russian citizens registered in Dagestan. From them 1648 are residents of the republic (including those who serve sentence in the penitentiary system), the press-service of the republican branch of the Russian Federal Consumer Rights Protection and Human Health Control Service has informed the RIA "Dagestan" correspondent.
In recent years the number of HIV-infected women has rapidly increased in Dagestan by reason of sexually transmitted HIV infection intensification: in 2000 the sexually transmitted HIV infection made 25%, and in 2010 it made 59 % of all cases. By results of epidemiologic researches the women involved into the epidemic process are infected by their HIV positive husbands – drug addicts. The positive HIV-status of these women is usually revealed by standard tests during the pregnancy period.
The target program “Anti-HIV/AIDS” realized in Dagestan since 2001 has been significantly accelerated by the federal target project "Health", one of the components of which is “Preventive maintenance of HIV-infection, hepatitis B and C, revealing and treatment of HIV-infected persons”. The republican center on preventive maintenance and struggle against AIDS has been provided with all the necessary equipment for diagnostics of the immune status of HIV-infected, and the means of adequate treatment.
